1967 RS/SS-396/325 HP Convertible Camaro

Our nicely restored, though not show quality, Butternut Yellow convertible with the rare Deluxe Interior in the same color has a noteworthy history, as the heavily optioned Camaro was at one time a Chevrolet Company car out of Chevrolet's Central Office. It was driven by E.M. "Pete" Estes, who at the time was General Manager of Chevrolet Motor Division and Vice President of General Motors. Mr. Estes later became President of General Motors.

Fortunately for us Camaro buffs, Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which ordered and provided the various "Factory Official" cars were given a copy of the factory invoicesupon which would be written who the vehicle was originally ordered and tagged for. The factory executive would take delivery of the vehicle from Berger and drive it for approximately 3,000 miles, then turn it in to the Central Office garage, returned to Berger Chevrolet, and re-sold to the public.

When it came to color, options trim, etc., what each exec ordered is what Berger received, dealer prepped and provided. The abundance of options on our Camaro (and the color) would probably not have been ordered by a dealer for in-stock sale. The GM execs however, would order every and any option they wanted - as they didn't have to pay for them. Interestingly, the color yellow was not very popular with conservative west Michigan, and Berger felt that having been driven by the "Father of the Camaro" would certainly help re-sell the car.

Note the reproduction Buternut Yellow Interior upholstery in the photo. Replaced in the early 90's when still available with the incorrect black vinyl seat insert surround used on all the reproduction upholstery at the time. The original factory color insert was a dark gold, and if you look at our 67 Buternut Yellow coupe, the same reproduction upholstery has been correctly dyed to match the original.

The original big block engine was blown sometime after 1970 (on B-35, on the way to Ravanna) and was eventually replaced in '92 with a correct 3902406 block. The block was decked at that time and re-stamped.
